Gum disease

Gum disease is a condition that affects the gums and supporting bone of teeth. There are two types: gingivitis, which is reversible and characterized by inflammation and bleeding of the gums, and periodontitis, which occurs when gingivitis is not treated and spreads to affect the supporting bone, causing teeth to loosen and eventually fall out. At Dant Y Coed, dental nurses with a certificate in Oral Health Education run oral health clinics and offer prevention and good oral hygiene advice, while a hygienist and dental therapists provide treatment for patients’ gums.

Periodontal therapy is a type of treatment that aims to prevent, stabilise, or reverse gum disease. It may involve procedures such as scaling and root planing (deep cleaning of the teeth and roots), medication, and/or surgery.
Periodontal therapy is typically recommended for individuals with gum disease, also known as periodontitis. However, some people may be at a higher risk for gum disease and may benefit from preventive periodontal therapy, even if they do not yet have signs of gum disease. Your dentist will be able to advise you on any treatment you may require during a routine examination.
The frequency of periodontal therapy will depend on the severity of your gum disease and how well you respond to treatment. In some cases, a single deep cleaning may be sufficient to stabilize or reverse gum disease. In other cases, multiple visits and ongoing maintenance therapy may be needed to manage the condition. Your dentist or periodontist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that meets your specific needs.

As a part of your extensive dental examination we always check the health of your gums. Gum disease is a slow disease that affects the gums and bone that support your teeth. Some of the tell tale signs are bleeding on brushing, bad breath, bad taste and loose teeth.

There are two types of gum disease:

  • Gingivitis- inflammation of the gums which often results in bleeding on brushing. This is a reversible disease.
  • Periodontitis- If gingivitis is not treated it can spread below the gums, affecting the bone supporting your teeth. The bone and gum eventually recede and your teeth become looser and looser until they eventually fall out. Once you have periodontitis you will need treatment and assistance from your hygienist regularly.

At Dant Y Coed many of our dental nurses have a certificate in Oral Health Education. They run their own oral health clinics with prevention in priority, offering new advice and reinforcing the importance of good oral hygiene. We also have a hygienist and three dental therapists working together offering the best treatment for our patient’s gums. If you have any questions please get in touch with our team.
